The Saint Paul Almanac is pleased to announce the sixth in its 2012–2013 season of acclaimed Lowertown Reading Jams, which celebrate the rich literary history of Minnesota’s capital city.

“The Blacker The Berry” Lowertown Reading Jam will be presented on Wednesday, March 27th, 2013 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar, 308 Prince Street in Saint Paul. This presentation of the popular and eclectic series is a long-anticipated reading by 25+ of some of the most prolific women of color in the Twin Cities is curated by Shá Cage. “The Blacker The Berry” features performances by Arleta Little, Katie Leo, Jamela Pettiford, Signe Harriday, Marcie Rendon, Lisa Brimmer, Eliza Rasheed, Adia Morris, Wisdom Mawusi, Ramla Bile, Joi Lewis, Beverly Cottman, Adaobi Okule, Tish Jones, Christina Benz, Charla Marie-Bailey, Jayanthi Kyle, Carolyn Holbrook, Shavunda Horsley, Suzie Cheng, Teonna Marshall, Lynnea Doublette, Hope Cervantes, Kemi Ojelade, Shá Cage and more! All ages, no cover, donations accepted. Food and beverages for sale.

About “The Blacker The Berry” Lowertown Reading Jam

Shá Cage has invited 25 of the Twin Cities’ most interesting women of color around a shared theme, “The Blacker the Berry.” Some writers, some not; some performers, some not—all with short, poignant responses to the theme, “The Blacker the Berry”.
Expect laughter, deep thought, community engagement, knee-slapping, and finger-snapping.

About the curator: Shá Cage

Sha-Cage Shá Cage has traveled widely to such areas as Canada, England, Africa, New York, Bosnia, France, and more, teaching and performing her work that largely centers around topics of identity, class, cultural celebration, and home. She recently closed the play Nellie at the MN History Theater playing “young Nellie” alongside Greta Oglesby followed by her first solo work titled N.I.G.G.E.R. at Intermedia Arts. Internationally: She has worked at the Hackney Empire Theater, Nottingham Playhouse, and Zion Arts in England. She was seen last in Appomattox at the Guthrie Theater and in Penumbra’s production of Amen Corner. Notable local roles include: Agnes in Agnes Under the Big Top (Mixed Blood), Helena in Eclipsed, Venus in Venus (Frank Theater), Josephine in Ruined (Mixed Blood), and the Bride in Blood Wedding (10 Thousand Things). She’s also worked with Illusion, Pangea, and Jeune Luene. Film Credits include: Drop Dead Gorgeous, Midnight Chronicles, Cry About a Nickel, and Radio. Recent Awards include: A 2011 Emmy: “I Believe in Public Access” commercial, a 2011 McKnight Theater Fellowship and named a “Changemaker” (Women’s Press).
