Your Art Can Ride Transit

SAINT PAUL (September 16, 2016) – Saint Paul Almanac is moving into the second phase of its IMPRESSIONS project, bringing the works of local artists and poets to transit. Almanac is now looking for local visual artists to submit examples of their work. The deadline for visual artists’ submissions has been extended to Nov. 15, 2016.
IMPRESSIONS is a new project where the Almanac will work with 24 writers and 24 artists to publish and produce six broadsides each quarter, 24 broadsides for the year on transit in the metropolitan area. Each broadside is a unique poster of a local poet’s poem combined with a local artist’s work as a reflection of that poem.
“We’ve had enthusiastic responses from people from all over the metropolitan area who have sent in their poems,” said Almanac editor Shaquan Foster. “Soon, an eager group of community editors will pick the poems—ones with the strongest voices for our communities. The poets and editors are also excited to see what local images will come out of the imagination in this metro area full of brilliant artists.”
From the pool of applicants, 24 artists will be selected to create visual art to be displayed with the poetry that inspired that artwork. Selected artists will receive a prize of $500 for the work they create for this project. Also included in the project will be:
- a film at the conclusion that showcases artists and writers in a live performance
- quarterly parties to celebrate, read the poems, and meet the poets and artists
- broadsides available for sale to the public
