The Book

In a hyper-local and community-oriented way, the annual Saint Paul Almanac book is a people’s meeting space for sharing the stories and poems of our city. The Almanac celebrates and documents the city’s history and its creative forces; its residents’ memories and current experiences; and the ever-changing urban landscape. Through reading each other’s stories and poems we learn from and build new connections with each other.

In 2018, we engaged over 1,000 readers, 2,100 audience members, 76 civic groups and businesses, 28 community editors, and reviewed 383 written submissions.

Before the Saint Paul Almanac, no publication existed that offered the opportunity for so many residents and writers to contribute their voices each year to a publication and to have that writing be read by so many Saint Paulites through our local distribution and sales channels. This year, approximately thirty local bookstores, coffee shops, gift shops, and grocery stores sell the Saint Paul Almanac. We sold over 2,000 2017 Saint Paul Almanac books.

Each year over 20 community editors read the submissions and decide together which pieces to include in the Almanac. Community editor submissions are read by a different cohort.

Saint Paul is recognized as one of the most literate cities in the country, and the residents of the city of Saint Paul and Saint Paul visitors are our target audiences. We focus on engaging Saint Paul youth by encouraging them to be community editors.

Contributor and community editors

The Saint Paul Almanac is a literary campfire around which the Saint Paul community gathers to share their stories. Each edition brings together a multigenerational and multi-ethnic group of community editors to select the stories and poems chosen to appear in the coming edition.
